Seed on the Throne

1 Samuel 16.1-13; Jer. 33.14-16

David knew about trusting God’s promises! At an early age David was anointed as the king to succeed Saul’s throne. It took many years to see the fulfillment of that promise for him to rule Israel. When David was king, God made him another promise, that the seed of David would sit on his throne to rule over an eternal Kingdom. What does that mean? David wouldn’t ever live to see this fulfilled, but God’s promise has come true in Jesus!

Key Verse

“For all of God’s promises have been fulfilled in Christ”
2 Corinthians 1.20a (NLT)

Boaz the Redeemer

The book of Ruth

As a desperately poor and vulnerable foreigner, Ruth seemed a very unlikely ancestor of both king David and Jesus the Messiah. Boaz, however, took note of her loyal faithfulness to her mother-in-law Naomi. Boaz trusted God’s promises and showed Ruth gracious kindness; paying a price for her to be included in his own family. Boaz showed what it would be like when Jesus came: Jesus paid a price for us to be included in the family of God so that we can also be instruments of God’s kingdom here on earth!

Food in the Wilderness

Exodus 16.1-36; John 6.57-58

God always sustains his people! As the nation of Israel wandered through the wilderness, God led them and he fed them. The manna and the quail that God sent reminds us that we can trust in God and his promises each day. Jesus reminds us that he is the bread of life. In the same way that God kept the Israelites alive in the wilderness, he give us new life through his Son.

Moses the Mediator

Exodus 34.29-35; Deuteronomy 18:15; John 8:12

When Moses came down from Mount Sinai with the ten commandments, the Bible tells us that his face shone from reflecting the glory of God! It soon faded, but every time Moses went to speak with God his face would become radiant again. Moses was a great prophet, but God promised that he would raise up up a prophet from Israel like Moses (Deut. 18.15). This prophet proved not just to reflect the light, but he was the light (John 8:12). Through Jesus we can all come face-to-face with God and his light and love can shine through us!

Passover: The Lamb who was Slain

Exodus 18.1-28; John 1.29; Galatians 5.1

Nobody wants to be a slave. When somebody–or something–is controlling you it becomes difficult to be who God called you to be. God promised that the Israelites would be his chosen nation, but they were enslaved by the Egyptians. By the blood of a pure and spotless lamb, God spared his people from the devastation of the final plague, and he set them free from slavery. Jesus cares about the whole world enough that he came as the pure and spotless lamb so that we could be set free from sin.

Joseph: Slave to Savior

Gen. 37-50; Acts 7.9-14

Life is full of ups and downs. Sometimes things go well and sometimes they don’t. Joseph is a great example to us that we can trust God’s promises no matter the circumstances. God had a plan for Jacob’s sons, and he used Joseph to save his brothers from the famine. God has a plan for us too but his promises to us are fulfilled in Jesus. No matter the circumstances we can know that God loves us and we can put our faith in Jesus!

Stairway to Heaven

Gen. 28.10-22; Jn. 1.51

Imagine discovering a stairway to heaven! Imagine looking up and seeing the Lord at the top of the stairway speaking to you and promising you his presence and protection, and telling you that he wants you to be part of his plan to bless the whole world! This is what happened to Jacob, but the same is true for anyone who puts their faith in Jesus. Jesus compared himself to a stairway to heaven. Through him we can encounter God and grow in the knowledge of the truth!

God Provides a Ram

Gen. 22.1-18; Heb. 11. 17-19

God called Abraham to offer up his son Isaac, and he responded with total obedience. This took great faith on Abraham’s part, because it was through his son that all of what God promised him was going to be fulfilled. Because Abraham trusted God fully he was willing to obey God, even with a command as tough as this one. God’s promises to us are fulfilled through his own son Jesus. We know that we can always trust God’s promises! Continue reading → God Provides a Ram

Bread and Wine After the Battle

Gen. 14; Heb. 7.1-3

Melchizedek is a mysterious priestly king of peace who came to refresh Abraham with bread and wine after he returned from battle. Melchizedek is an incredible picture of Jesus who brings ultimate refreshment to our lives. Melchizedek offered bread and wine, a symbol of Jesus’ death on the cross. The Promised Son. A Chosen People.

Gen. 12.1-5; Gal. 3.9

God chose a man named Abraham through whom he would establish a chosen nation to make his name great. The fulfillment of God’s promise to Abraham depended on the birth of a son, but the ultimate fulfillment would come through the birth of God’s very own son. God’s promise to Abraham extends to us and finds it’s fulfillment through his Son! We want the kids to see that God wants them to be part of his chosen people. They can trust God’s promises for themselves because of what Jesus has done for us!
