Jesus is our Wonderful Counselor! It means that we can know him personally and not just know about him, so we can trust him to listen to our problems and guide us in the right direction. 1 Kings 6–9
When Solomon became king over Israel God had him build a beautiful temple in Jerusalem. The temple was double the size of the Tabernacle that the Israelites built in the wilderness! 2 Samuel 6
David became king of Israel after Saul died but he knew that God was really in charge. David was ruling from Jerusalem, so he decided that the Ark of God’s Presence should also be in Jerusalem. This story is about David’s mission to please and honor God by bringing the Ark to it’s rightful place in Jerusalem.
1 Samuel 24
Saul was jealous of David and hated him, even though David had never done anything against Saul. When Saul came after David to try to kill him, David could have taken revenge. Instead David chose to trust God to deal with Saul, and he showed him forgiveness and honor!
1 Samuel 17
David’s fearless trust in the LORD was first demonstrated in him taking on the bear and the lion. When it came to Goliath he wasn’t shaken because he had seen God’s faithfulness. 1 Samuel 16.1-13
We’ve taught this lesson before from the perspective of trusting God’s promises. Another significant observation of this story is that God cared about what was going on in David’s heart. David wasn’t the obvious choice to be anointed by Samuel, but God chose him because of what he saw on the inside. Judges 4
Deborah was a wise and faithful judge! When Deborah heard from God that Barak should attack the Canaanite army, he refused to go unless she went as well. Deborah’s wisdom, fairness and trust in God gave Barak the courage to do the right thing. Deborah was not out for glory, but to do as God willed and to point others to the Lord.
Judges 16:4-31
Samson was called to be devoted to God in a unique way. Instead, Samson disobeyed God and his parents, which lead to him being tricked by Delilah and captured by the Philistines. Even though he had done wrong, God still allowed Samson to repent. True repentance brings us back to God!
Judges 7
Gideon was the least important person, in the least important family, in the least important tribe. God called this weak man to defend the Israelites against an enemy that was as numerous as locusts! The best part though is that God didn’t allow Gideon to rely on himself, nor the army he gathered. God wants us to depend on him in the same way that Gideon discovered. Joshua 9
Part of God’s promise to Abraham was to bless all nations. In this story we see a shadow of God’s redemptive plan for the Gentiles. God’s covenant promise is eventually fulfilled to the whole world through Jesus! We don’t have to try trick our way into God’s family because God has opened the door for all of us! We only need to trust in him and receive his free gift!
