Deborah was a wise and faithful judge! When Deborah heard from God that Barak should attack the Canaanite army, he refused to go unless she went as well. Deborah’s wisdom, fairness and trust in God gave Barak the courage to do the right thing. Deborah was not out for glory, but to do as God willed and to point others to the Lord.
Samson was called to be devoted to God in a unique way. Instead, Samson disobeyed God and his parents, which lead to him being tricked by Delilah and captured by the Philistines. Even though he had done wrong, God still allowed Samson to repent. True repentance brings us back to God!
Gideon was the least important person, in the least important family, in the least important tribe. God called this weak man to defend the Israelites against an enemy that was as numerous as locusts! The best part though is that God didn’t allow Gideon to rely on himself, nor the army he gathered. God wants us to depend on him in the same way that Gideon discovered. Part of God’s promise to Abraham was to bless all nations. In this story we see a shadow of God’s redemptive plan for the Gentiles. God’s covenant promise is eventually fulfilled to the whole world through Jesus! We don’t have to try trick our way into God’s family because God has opened the door for all of us! We only need to trust in him and receive his free gift!
Crossing the Jordan was a huge moment for the nation of Israel. It was the first step to them taking the Promised Land and it happened in a miraculous way! Joshua served as a faithful assistant to Moses for many years. When Moses died, God gave Joshua the special task of leading Israel into the Promised Land! God’s constant reminder to Joshua was to be strong and courageous because God was with him. Whatever God calls us to, we know that we also have God’s presence because of Jesus’ work on the cross.
Jesus is our gentle king and he works in us through his Holy Spirit to bring about gentleness in our lives! Gentleness means that we work toward the welfare of those around us, rather than being rude and inconsiderate.Continue reading “Gentleness – Fruit of the Spirit”
